This month marked 25 years since the tragic passing of singer #Aaliyah. Years later, her uncle’s accusation against his own son concerning the incident has surfaced.

According to documents obtained by tmztv, Aaliyah’s cousin, #JomoHankerson, filed a lawsuit against his father, and Aaliyah’s uncle, #BarryHankerson, concerning music rights.

During their battle, it was shared that Barry claims Jomo was paid to coordinate travel for her music video in the Bahamas. However, he claims Jomo “failed in his responsibility” for the travel plans, and she ended up on a private jet that crashed and claimed her life, as well as her team that was onboard.

Barry says the plane crash “may have been avoided had [Jomo] followed through on his compensated task of travel coordination.” He says his relationship with his son hasn’t been the same since Aaliyah’s passing.

In the lawsuit at hand, Jomo reportedly claims his father breached a settlement over music rights. In particular, the recording masters and music publishing copyrights for Aaliyah, DMX, Timbaland, and Toni Braxton.

Jomo says he’s owed 12% of the money Barry has made from the music assets, but alleges his father used his label, Blackground Records, to hide money and “manufacture expenses that have nothing to do with the music assets, all for the purpose of pressuring [him] into accepting less than what he is owed.”
