On the CITIUS MAG Podcast, coach laurentmeuwly breaks down his thoughts on the best way to break the women’s 800m world record.

With Keely Hodgkinson, Audrey Werro, Femke Broeders-Bol, Georgia Hunter Bell and Lilian Odira all pushing the event forward, he doesn’t think there’s one perfect formula because the ideal race looks different for each athlete. 

• If it’s going to happen in a competitive race with multiple women vying for it, he says it needs to look more like Stockholm: fast, aggressive and clean. The key there was allowing the contenders to race at the pace they want without disrupting each other. In Stockholm, Keely attacked, Audrey responded and eventually passed her with 120m remaining — all without contact or either athlete preventing the other from executing their race.

• Zurich ft. Werro and Broeders-Bol was different. Contact around 600m and athletes responding to each other’s moves meant neither could completely run the race they wanted.

For the WR to fall when 2 or 3 of these icons are in the same race, he says competition can help push the pace…as long as it doesn’t get in the way of it.
