Ways to access scholarly articles if you are not affiliated with a university:

Sign up with academia.edu (academia.edu) academia.edu and ResearchGate (researchgate.net). 

Many authors attach versions of their papers to their profiles; you can also direct message authors and ask them for copies.

Preprint servers. Many authors will post versions of their manuscripts on preprint servers like biorxv. Careful, they are not peer reviewed though!

Search for dissertations. Many universities will put dissertations online and these are early versions of published work. Careful though, they are not peer-reviewed the same way a book would be.

Email the author directly and ask for a copy of the manuscript. I’ve had a 100% success rate with this one.
Search for open-access articles and open-access databases. This is more popular in STEM than the humanities I believe.

Google the article title and keep searching past page 1. Sometimes, if you dig around you can find a copy of the paper you need on someone else’s website.

Google Books. Often gives a “free preview” of a chapter or 2 of a book.

Contact your local public library. They may have access to some databases or loan systems.
