Picasso with Perro, his Dalmatian, at Villa La Californie in Cannes.

Animals were a constant presence in Picasso’s life. Perro the Dalmatian, Lump the dachshund, Jan the boxer, and even his goat, Esmeralda, all shared his world and inevitably found their way into his work, appearing across drawings, ceramics, and paintings.

Perro was no exception. In 1959, Picasso made him the subject of Le Chien Dalmate, turning another familiar presence from his everyday life into art.
