A new law that Gov. Kim Reynolds signed in May is ringing in significant changes for Iowa's public charter school system, including a change to the way their teachers get paid.

House File 2754 lets charter schools access the Teacher Salary Supplement that in 2024 helped meet a required minimum teacher pay of $50,000 for those in the first 12 years of teaching and $62,000 thereafter.

The new law is an expansion of school choice which Republicans have championed in recent years. They argue parents should be able to send their children where they wish. Iowa Democrats and have largely opposed the new law, saying it takes away from public schools.
