The Fox body is still the best Mustang Ford ever built and the S550 crowd only argues because they've never driven a 2,900-pound car with a pushrod 5.0 in it. Every generation since has been heavier, safer, and further from the point. Change my mind.

And before anyone starts on the Mustang II — that parts-bin Pinto-adjacent thing is the only reason the nameplate survived the '70s at all. The original was a Falcon in a nicer suit. This car has ALWAYS been built out of whatever was on the shelf. That's the character, not the flaw.

Fox math for the people pretending otherwise: 5.0 HO, 225hp in the later cars, curb weight in the low 3,000s, and a chassis so simple you can rebuild the whole front end in a weekend with hand tools. Wheel side it's 4x108 on everything until the '93 Cobra went 5x114.3 — which is exactly why every serious Fox build starts with a 5-lug conversion before the first wheel order.

If you want the modern version of that feeling without the four-lug tax: 2011-2014 GT. Coyote 5.0, 412hp (420 for '13-'14), 5x114.3, 70.5 bore, MT82 six-speed, and a live axle that everybody complains about right up until they see the drag times. Square 19x10 territory once you sort the rear, and used prices are still soft compared to everything around it.
