Every 25-year-old trainer will attack me for this. Sharing the science anyway.

What they tell you: a calorie is a calorie, meal timing does not matter, just eat less.

What they miss: your 40+ hormonal system runs on completely different rules than a 25-year-old’s. The clock is one of them.

I am 50. I have spent 20+ years specializing in women’s hormones. Meal timing is the change that moves the most women the fastest.

Here is what the research shows.

Researchers moved meals four hours later without changing a single calorie. Hunger went up. Waking energy expenditure went down. Fat tissue shifted its gene expression toward storage. Same food, different clock (Vujovic 2022, Cell Metabolism). Small study, 16 people, and I will say that out loud. The direction matches what I see in practice every week.

Late eating also costs you sleep, and sleep is where your insulin sensitivity lives. Cutting sleep by about 80 minutes a night for six weeks raised fasting insulin and insulin resistance in women, and the effect was strongest in the postmenopausal group (Zuraikat 2024, Diabetes Care).

So the loop runs like this. You eat at 9pm. You sleep shallow. You wake up hungrier than you went to bed. You are reaching for carbs by 10am. And you decide your metabolism is broken.

Your metabolism is not broken. You are eating against your own clock.

At 30 you could eat at 10pm and wake up fine. Your body gave you a free pass on the timing. That pass expired somewhere in your forties and nobody sent you the memo.

I usually stop eating by 6. Not 7. I am asking you for less than I ask of myself.

Comment INSULIN and I will send you my Insulin Advantage Quick Start Guide!

Follow me first so it lands in your DMs instead of your message requests.

Save this for the next night you are standing at the fridge at 9:15 telling yourself it is just a little something.

Send this to the friend who eats at 8:30 and cannot work out why she is wrecked by 3pm.

Follow for what 20 years of clinical work with women over 40 shows.
