As I reflect on what it took to get here, I think back 9 years ago when I was fired from a fortune 500 company while working as a Supply Chain Analyst in Nashville, TN. I remember very clear the feeling of weight being lifted from my spirit and God said Go! That same week I packed up all my belongings, broke my apartment lease, and moved home to Detroit. I knew a couple years prior that I wanted to return home, but I was stuck in the routine of making a living rather than living my making. 

I relocated on a mission to create impact in the city. Some people thought I was crazy to move back to Detroit but my vision was very clear. Since the day I returned, I’ve been on the ground giving blood, sweat, and tears to this city. I’ve mentored many, helped young people get into college, delivered keynotes at graduations, volunteered, been an emcee at corporate events, given money, a ton of time, made tons of connections, the list goes on and on. Oftentimes I did things for free out of the generosity of my heart (and still do). For that work, I received several awards and recognition for the things I’ve done. When the vision of creating werun313 came about, it was deeply rooted in positively impacting lives through the power of running & building community.

Fast forward to today, I’m being honored in The Soul of Philanthropy Exhibit at The Detroit Historical Museum alongside more than 90 other Detroiters that give the same passion and energy to this incredible city. It’s hard to put into words what being recognized at a historical museum feels like while you’re alive to witness.
