Ahead of the start of the school year, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani banned the use of AI in classrooms for students from pre-K through 8th grade. Also, the use of tablets and laptops will be capped to fewer than 45 minutes day until high school.⁠
⁠
The new rules do allow for limited pilot programs that will introduce high school students to AI, but companion chatbots will be prohibited for all students.⁠
⁠
Meanwhile, NYC teachers will continue to be allowed the use of AI for lesson planning, generating assignments and tests — but not for grading or any assessments.⁠
