The Arizona Department of Transportation has opened a second tunnel in Kingman as part of a project to eliminate one of the most frustrating stops on the drive between Phoenix and Las Vegas.

The new 239-foot tunnel carries northbound Beale Street traffic from downtown Kingman and Interstate 40 as it merges onto northbound US 93 toward Las Vegas. It is the project’s second tunnel and the one that will handle the most traffic. The first tunnel, a 215-foot span serving local traffic on Fort Beale Drive, opened in September 2025.

ADOT says the $106 million project is now 80 percent complete.

The goal is a free-flowing interchange connecting I-40 and US 93 in west Kingman. Currently, drivers traveling between the two highways have to stop at a traffic signal on Beale Street. When the project is finished, one mile of new ramps will allow traffic to move between the two freeways without stopping.

ADOT’s Garin Groff told KJZZ the change will be most significant for traffic coming back from Las Vegas into Phoenix, where drivers currently get backed up making a left turn from US 93 onto I-40.

The full project includes five new bridges, two bridge widenings, four bridge rehabilitations, two miles of sound walls, and six miles of widened or newly constructed roadway. ADOT began work in July 2024 and construction is expected to continue into 2027.

Drivers should expect continued daytime and nighttime work along with lane restrictions. Exits to Beale Street from both US 93 and I-40 remain open throughout construction, so access to local businesses, Route 66 and downtown Kingman is not affected.
