A woman from Washington state was charged with a felony after allegedly making 18 threatening phone calls to a Maricopa County animal shelter in the span of about 40 minutes.

According to court documents, Katie Michelle Dickson, 37, of Vancouver, Washington, called Maricopa County Animal Care and Control 18 separate times on June 26, 2024. Maricopa County officials say the calls included threats of arson, murder and sexual violence directed at employees, and that most of them were recorded.

What officials initially believed to be an explosive threat prompted an evacuation of the MCACC building and a search by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad. Investigators later determined there was no clear mention of one in the recordings.

Dickson turned herself in to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office after a warrant was issued for her arrest, and later bonded out.

Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Thomas Galvin said Animal Care and Control employees do amazing work every day finding good outcomes for the pets in their care, yet are often subjected to unfair criticism and relentless personal attacks online and in person.

MCACC Director Debbie McKnight said the safety of her staff is the department’s top priority, that they take any threats against team members very seriously, and that they remain committed to providing a safe, respectful space for everyone they serve.

This case was announced in September 2025 and stems from calls made in June 2024.
