A federal inmate who escaped from the minimum security satellite camp at the United States Penitentiary in Tucson on Wednesday was back in custody by the end of the same day.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 46-year-old James Cangro was discovered missing at approximately 8:10 a.m. The U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies were notified, and the search prompted a lockdown at the state prison located near the federal facility.

Officials confirmed Thursday morning that Cangro was located later that day, not far from the prison facility, and was taken back into custody.

Cangro was sentenced in the District of New Mexico to a 132-month sentence on charges including violent felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, violent felon in possession of body armor, possession of a firearm not registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, and possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of a mixture containing methamphetamine.

He will remain in federal custody and faces additional charges related to the escape.

The satellite camp at USP Tucson is a minimum security facility adjacent to the high-security penitentiary on South Wilmot Road.
