The number of people confirmed missing after the Grand Canyon flash flood has dropped from about 15 to one, but officials say they are still working to determine whether anyone else may have been in the affected area.

The National Park Service identified two hikers recovered after Saturday’s flooding as John Giusti, 46, and Brent Rosenkranz, 42, both of Granbury, Texas. A third member of their group, 53-year-old Timothy Allen Smith, remains missing.

The three men entered the canyon Friday before the flash flood swept through Bright Angel Canyon on Saturday. Search crews have continued combing the area for Smith using ground teams, aircraft and other resources.

Officials initially said about 15 people were missing or unaccounted for. By Monday, that number had been narrowed to one confirmed missing person based on available records. However, NPS says additional hikers may have been in the area without officials knowing because daytime trail users are not required to have permits.

The flood sent water, mud, rocks and debris through Bright Angel Creek, damaging trails, footbridges and other infrastructure. Officials say 82 people were rescued from the area over the weekend, many by helicopter.

Search and rescue operations remain active, and NPS is asking anyone with information about people who may have been hiking or backpacking in Bright Angel Canyon on August 29 to contact investigators.
