The National Park Service is warning drivers around Lake Mead that shoreline areas can look completely dry while hiding deep, soft mud underneath capable of trapping even large 4x4 vehicles.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is urging anyone driving in areas where vehicles are permitted near the shoreline to pay close attention to ground conditions and avoid assuming a dry-looking surface is solid.

Drivers are advised to stay away from soft or saturated areas and use extra caution as changing shoreline conditions expose areas of lakebed that may not be stable.

If a vehicle does become stuck, the National Park Service works with Southern Nevada Off Road Recovery, a nonprofit volunteer group that assists with recoveries throughout the region.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area stretches across Arizona and Nevada, including areas such as Temple Bar and Willow Beach on the Arizona side.
