A former NAU fraternity leader has pleaded guilty to felony hazing after an 18-year-old student passed away from alcohol poisoning following an off-campus rush event.

Court documents say Colin Martinez and three other students trying to join Delta Tau Delta were brought to the gathering with pillowcases over their heads.

Investigators say the group was told to finish a large bottle of vodka together before being given another bottle as part of the hazing. Prosecutors believe the four students consumed about 3.5 liters of alcohol in total.

Around 3 a.m., someone at the house reportedly searched online for signs of alcohol poisoning, but police were not called until hours later.

Martinez was found unresponsive the next morning. His blood-alcohol level was 0.425%, more than five times the legal driving limit.

Carter Eslick has now pleaded guilty to felony hazing. His plea agreement calls for probation instead of prison, but a judge still has to approve the agreement and determine his final sentence.

He could also face a fine of up to $150,000 and be ordered to pay restitution to Martinez’s family.

Three fraternity leaders were originally arrested, but Eslick was the only one indicted. NAU’s Delta Tau Delta chapter has since been shut down.

What do you think of the plea agreement?
