Standing beside Mike Myers, Ye abandoned the teleprompter and spoke about what he was seeing in New Orleans: predominantly Black communities stranded without help, a painfully slow government response, and media coverage describing Black survivors taking supplies as “looting” while white survivors were portrayed as “looking for food.” Then he looked into the camera and said seven words that immediately became part of American culture: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

The anger behind it extended far beyond Kanye. Days later, polling found 66% of Black Americans believed the government would have responded faster if Katrina’s victims were mostly white. Ye had taken a conversation already happening across Black America and forced millions of people watching national television to confront it.

The aftermath followed both men for years. Bush later called the accusation one of the most “disgusting” moments of his presidency, while Kanye eventually admitted he didn’t have grounds to call Bush a racist. But over 20 years later, the moment remains powerful for a different reason: one of the biggest artists in the world realized he had a live microphone, ignored the approved script, and used it to say what he believed nobody else on the broadcast would.
