Inclusive fitness changes lives. 💪

Chelsea Meyer Schmit, Fitness Manager at Northwestern Medicine Huntley Health & Fitness, has demonstrated what’s possible when fitness spaces are designed to be accessible, supportive, and community-centered.

In 2025, Chelsea received the Medical Fitness Association’s (MFA) “Program Innovation Award” for Inclusive Movement—a groundbreaking fitness initiative created specifically for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID). What started as a single weekly session has grown to eight weekly sessions, serving over 85 participants with varying abilities and skill levels.

“Participants have not only improved their physical health but also gained confidence, social connections, and a sense of belonging. For many, this program is the highlight of their week—a safe space where they are seen, supported, and celebrated,” says Meyer Schmit.

Special Olympics’ new two-year partnership with the Medical Fitness Association will build on this kind of inclusive programming by promoting accessible medical fitness opportunities and helping improve health outcomes for people with ID.
