LSU made a statement in the first game of the Lane Kiffin era.

After a nearly two-hour weather delay pushed kickoff deep into the night, No. 11 LSU finally took the field against Clemson in a packed Death Valley.

Clemson actually struck first, intercepting Sam Leavitt on LSU’s opening possession and turning it into a 49-yard field goal for an early 3–0 lead.

It didn’t last long.

LSU responded with 31 unanswered points before halftime, including a 30-yard pick-six from Jordan Ross and two rushing touchdowns from Leavitt. By the break, LSU had outgained Clemson 336–54 and recorded 21 first downs compared to Clemson’s one. 

The second half wasn’t any better for Clemson.

Leavitt connected with Winston Watkins Jr. for a 32-yard touchdown, Dilin Jones added his second rushing score of the night, and LSU eventually emptied the bench with the game completely out of reach.

LSU 51. Clemson 10.

Leavitt finished with 230 passing yards, 113 rushing yards and three total touchdowns, while Jones rushed for 113 yards and two scores. LSU piled up 644 total yards and 309 rushing yards while holding Clemson to only 145 total yards and eight first downs. 

Clemson’s offense struggled so badly that Dabo Swinney pulled starting quarterback Christopher Vizzina for freshman Tait Reynolds before halftime. The Tigers didn’t reach the end zone until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. 

A year after LSU went into Clemson and won 17–10, the rematch wasn’t even close.

And in his first game as LSU’s head coach, Lane Kiffin walked out of Tiger Stadium with a 51–10 blowout victory.
