Colorado is once again taking a very different approach to college football.

Players have been spotted wearing their Instagram handles on the backs of their practice jerseys, replacing the traditional last name with usernames such as “@shedeursanders.”

The idea actually dates back to Deion Sanders’ time at Jackson State and followed him to Boulder when he took over Colorado in 2023. The Buffaloes continued using the personalized practice jerseys in 2024, and the concept has resurfaced again this week.

For Coach Prime, the reasoning has always been simple: help his players build their individual brands.

When asked about the jerseys in 2023, Sanders explained that players want to be noticed and gain followers, so he saw helping them grow their platforms as part of his responsibility as their head coach. Former Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis similarly described it as an opportunity for players to build their brands.

In the NIL era, those followers can mean much more than popularity.

A larger social media audience can increase a player’s exposure to potential sponsorships and give athletes a platform they can continue using long after their college careers end.

The jerseys have also generated plenty of debate, with images of Colorado’s practice uniforms going viral again and fans arguing over whether putting Instagram usernames on jerseys is innovative marketing or taking individual branding too far.

One important distinction: these are practice jerseys. Colorado still uses players’ names on its actual game uniforms.

But under Deion Sanders, even the back of a practice jersey has become an opportunity to promote the player wearing it.
