To fans, Phoebe Bridgers’ own music seemed to have indeed outlived her. Prior to her album announcement in June, Bridgers had taken a six-year hiatus from releasing an album, only interrupted by a rare cover or feature 

Along with the connection to her own disappearance, the title track, “Lost Weekend,” is one of many on the album that touch on darker themes such as death and grief. Inspired by the passing of her estranged father in early 2023, Bridgers articulates the complex grief of losing a parent first to addiction and abuse and later to death itself. 

“Bobby” is a puppy love-esque ode that centers on Bridgers’ current partner, Bo Burnham. This style of romantic exploration is expanded upon in “Liberty Tree,” and directly contrasts with “The Governor’s Waltz” where Bridgers recalls her past relationship with actor Paul Mescal.
