The Shawnee Mission School District is assembling a team to decide how artificial intelligence can be used in the classroom. The “AI Work Group” will be composed of 20-25 students, staff and community members from all five feeder high schools.

As of right now, SMSD has guiding documents for AI – a set of suggestions that help staff deal with AI usage in classrooms. The AI work group aims to create an AI policy, which is a set of rules all schools in the district must follow.

The AI work group, led by Associate Superintendent Sherry Dumolien, will determine when and how AI can be used in classes. Currently, AI such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are blocked for students. Yet programs such as Canva, with AI embedded in them, are left unblocked.
