Well it turns out you can’t float across a river in a napkin boat (knife to a gun fight might be a better analogy, but 🤷🏼‍♀️I like the napkin boat)... I knew coming into this that I wasn’t race fit, and didn't have any massive expectations of myself today... but was hopeful that maybe I’d surprise myself by being able to fight through it better than any of my training had given me reason to believe. Instead I ended up with what I would consider to be the worst case scenario performance wise. The napkin boat sank.

My "job" was to stay near the front through the first 10 miles which had a number of twisty roads and a few 90 degree turns, which I did... but after that, I was told I could take it easy, just sit in the peloton and get ready to grind it out over Mt. Gaylor... unfortunately for me it didn’t ever really feel easy, and as soon as any sort of surge was put on the pace I couldn’t follow. I got dropped early, chased back on, the whole race was taken off course so we were re-neutralized (chaos), and as soon as we hit the long climb over Mt. Gaylor I was finished.... I made it to the top alone, and rode the rest of the way alone. 30 some hot, lonely miles filled mostly with a lot of very negative self chatter which didn't help matters but I was unable to stop it. I missed the final turn in to the finish (we'd driven the route and I knew where it was... but I was so cracked from the heat and the effort I didn't trust my own judgement and there was no marker on the road or anyone telling me to turn there) eventually turned around and found my way... 27 minutes back of the leader and outside of the time cut... completely trashed and feeling like I hadn't just ridden a race at all... I'd just gone for a miserable ride, in 100 degree heat, mostly on a highway. It was easily among the top 3 worst days I've ever spent on a bike. Despite the race organizers deciding to allow all finishers to start tomorrow, I've decided to pull the plug. (Continued in comments).
