A day that marked the first collegiate volleyball matches in Wrigley Field’s 112-year history ended with No. 1 Nebraska’s matchup against Missouri postponed because of unsafe court conditions. Kentucky defeated Penn State in four sets in the opening match Sunday night. Nebraska and Missouri followed, but humidity created a slippery playing surface as the second match began. The teams played only 18 points. Nebraska led 11-7 before officials postponed the match. Problems surfaced during warmups, when players struggled to jump and land without slipping. The match was briefly paused just three points in as workers attempted to dry the court. Players and coaches also helped wipe down the surface. After another stoppage, crews applied a coating to the Teraflex court in an attempt to improve traction. But conditions did not improve enough to safely continue. Nebraska coach Dani Busboom Kelly said the event was on track to be a memorable moment for the sport before the weather intervened. “It was on its way to being a very, very epic moment for our sport,” Busboom Kelly said. “Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate.” Busboom Kelly praised the people who invested time and resources into bringing volleyball to one of America’s most iconic sports venues, but said player safety had to come first. “When people were falling and when they started feeling unsafe jumping, I think that’s when it got to the point,” she said. “They can deal with little slips and falls when they were diving, but when they were jumping, that’s when it gets scary.” An announced crowd of 43,607 filled Wrigley Field for the historic doubleheader, with fans traveling to Chicago and buying tickets, merchandise and concessions for a first-of-its-kind event. “The players are bummed because the fans — I think we all have a soft spot for anybody who paid money to travel here, paid for the tickets, probably bought gear, bought concessions,” Busboom Kelly said. “That’s a lot of investment for a lot of people. You want to put on a show for them.” Both programs want to make up the Nebraska-Missouri match, though details still need to be worked out. It would be played indoors. Busboom Kelly said she still likes the concept of volleyball in big venues, but the Wrigley experience reinforced that an outdoor setting comes with risks. “We tried it. It didn’t work,” she said. “We’ll stick to big stadiums like AT&T Stadium, T-Mobile Arena, with a roof over our head.” #Huskers #NebraskaVolleyball #WrigleyField #huskervolleyball #ncaavolleyball
