Water is sprayed on coal to prevent it from catching fire — but why? 🧐🔥💧

Coal may look like a solid, harmless pile of black rocks, but large amounts of stored coal can actually heat up and catch fire on their own. This happens because coal slowly reacts with oxygen in the air, producing heat. If that heat cannot escape fast enough, the temperature inside the coal pile can keep rising until spontaneous combustion occurs. 🔥

That’s why you’ll often see water sprays used around coal stockpiles and conveyor systems. 💦 The water helps cool the coal and reduce the temperature, while also increasing moisture and limiting the conditions that allow the coal to heat up rapidly.

But there’s an important detail: water isn’t simply sprayed everywhere without consideration.

Excessive moisture can create handling and quality problems, and the effectiveness depends on the type of coal, storage conditions, temperature, and how the coal is being handled.
Industrial facilities therefore monitor coal piles for temperature increases and hot spots, using water sprays or other fire-prevention systems when necessary.

Something as simple as spraying water is actually part of a much bigger system designed to prevent a massive coal pile from turning into a dangerous underground fire. ⚙️🔥
