#TakeActionTuesday: A recent Ted Lasso episode and an article from The Athletic both point to a glaring issue in women’s soccer: qualified women are frequently passed over for coaching opportunities, and they continue to face barriers to pathways needed to advance into head coaching roles

Here’s how these disparities appear in professional women’s soccer:

- Across 669 clubs in 86 women’s leagues worldwide, only 22% of head coaches are women.

- Of the 14 teams in the Women’s Super League, 8 head coaches are women.

- In the NWSL, just 5 of 16 clubs have a woman as head coach.

Even with these inequities, progress is being made. This year, FIFA announced a policy requiring every team in its women’s tournaments to include a woman as either a head coach or assistant coach.

We know women are qualified and capable of coaching at the highest level, and they deserve equitable opportunities to lead. Together, we must advocate for clearer pathways to coaching and greater investment in women coaches. #TheEquityProject

Your Turn:
1. Call on women’s soccer leagues to adopt policies like FIFA’s, requiring greater representation of women in coaching at every level.

2. Create opportunities for girls in your community to shadow local recreation or school coaches and learn what coaching looks like firsthand.

3. Read The Athletic’s article, “Ted Lasso Accidentally Stumbles Into Women’s Soccer’s Biggest Coaching Problem,” by Asli Pelit to learn more about the barriers women face in soccer coaching.
