TRANSPARENCY POST: I’ve lived with trichotillomania (a mental health condition tied to OCD that causes me to pull out my own hair when I’m stressed, anxious, or even just bored) since I was in 3rd grade.

At that age, I didn’t have a name for it. I just knew I couldn’t stop pulling out my eyebrows and that it felt so good when I did.

My family assumed it was a bad habit, something I could quit if I just tried harder. My friends assumed it was something only white people did. But if you’ve ever lived with trichotillomania, you know it’s more complicated than that and it doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from every race and background.

I didn’t even learn the name of my disorder until college. One day, my boyfriend asked me why I kept pulling out my eyelashes while watching TV and I hadn’t even realized I was doing it. I Googled it later that day and finally learned it was called trichotillomania.

For a long time, I kept this part of my life private because I thought people wouldn’t understand. But the more I’ve opened up (like sharing that I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder or navigating the grief of losing my mom), the more messages I’ve received from people saying, “I thought I was the only one.”

You’re not.

Whether you pull your hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, or struggle with another body-focused repetitive behavior, I want you to know there is nothing “wrong” with you. You are not lazy or crazy. You’re not weak. And you’re definitely not alone.

Healing hasn’t been a straight line for me….AT ALL. I literally told you I almost pulled out all of my eyebrows just two weeks ago!

…but I’m still trying.

Thank you for making this feel like a safe space and thank you @yasmeli_ortega for giving me browssss!!

If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear your experience. You never know who might read your comment and realize they aren’t alone. #trichotillomania #anxietydisorder #travel #méxico #eyebrowtint
