Do you use English in meetings? Sometimes you hear every word and still don’t know what the speaker is talking about. 
 
That’s when “Could you repeat that?” doesn’t help at all. 
 
If you missed a number, a name or a word because the audio was bad, asking someone to repeat it makes sense. 
 
But if you heard all of the words and still didn’t understand the meaning, don’t ask to repeat. Ask for something different: 
 
“Could you go over that again, please?” 
 
 
🔵 What does that mean in practice? 
🔵 Do you mean X or Y? 
 
🔵 Could you explain that in plain English? 
 
 
 
If they repeat it and you still don’t understand, don’t ask them to say the same thing again. Ask them to explain it another way. 
 
And if this happens to you in meetings, there are probably other moments where you’re not quite sure what to say.
