The Mitsubishi Pajero is officially back after five years, reviving the legendary SUV known as the Montero in some markets.

Rather than turning it into another crossover, Mitsubishi gave the new flagship a proper ladder frame, 230 mm of ground clearance and serious off-road hardware.

Power comes from a 2.4-liter turbo-diesel producing up to 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque through a new 8-speed automatic.

Super Select 4WD-II brings selectable 2WD, full-time 4WD and low-range capability, while Mitsubishi’s S-AWC helps manage traction and vehicle behavior across different surfaces.

It even gets dedicated Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and Rock modes for drivers who actually intend to take it off pavement.

Inside, Mitsubishi has modernized the classic Pajero triple gauges into a digital display showing things like altitude, compass heading, pitch and roll angles.

The Pajero has accumulated more than 3.29 million units of production across its previous four generations, making this one of Mitsubishi’s most important nameplate revivals in years.

Thailand gets it first, with Japan, Australia and eventually around 100 global markets planned, but a U.S. Montero return still hasn’t been confirmed.
