This #MuseumMonday, we are highlighting the Richmond Cottage Dining Room, one of the oldest rooms of the home, built in 1896. This year marks 130 years since its construction. The space originally served as the ground‑floor living area for Samuel and Edith Richmond, whose pioneer-era home was among the first in the town of Cutler and built from native Florida slash pine.

In 1900, the Richmond family enlarged their home, adding more rooms on the east side of the building, facing Biscayne Bay. Upon enlarging the cottage, the family established the Richmond Inn, which became the only hotel operating between Coconut Grove and Key West at the time of its opening. The first floor of the original living space then became the hotel dining room. After Charles Deering purchased and renovated the property in 1916 as his winter home, the room remained the estate’s primary dining area, even after the adjacent Stone House was completed in 1922. 

In 1992, the Richmond Cottage sustained damage during Hurricane Andrew. The Deering Estate was impacted by approximately 16 feet of storm surge and Category 5 wind gusts estimated at 200 mph, causing significant damage to the east side of the Richmond Cottage facing Biscayne Bay. Overall damage to the Deering Estate required roughly eleven million dollars in restoration work. Despite the catastrophic conditions, a portion of the Richmond Cottage remained standing; the intact section being the same dining room, the oldest part of the home. 

Today, the dining room serves as an active exhibition space and is seasonally decorated. Currently, the America 250 exhibition, “Family History is America’s Story: Tracing the Deering Family through Time,” is on view in the Richmond Cottage Dining Room through October 31st.
