Kauaʻi County is under a Hurricane Warning. Hurricane conditions are expected to begin today and continue into Tuesday.

Over the past 24 hours, we have watched this system veer closer to us — too close for comfort.

If you are still making last-minute preparations, finish them this morning. Be off our roadways and indoors today.

If you are in a coastal or unsafe area, make arrangements now to stay with family or friends. As a last resort, grab your go-kit and head to a refuge area.

We have five refuge areas open with the Red Cross, and pets are welcome. But refuge areas are a last resort. If your home is sound and outside the flood and surge zones, sheltering in place is often the better choice. Check in with your friends and family, and try sheltering with them if possible.

Store your drinking water now — a gallon per person per day — and fill your tubs and buckets. Outages can affect pumps and wells, so water service may be interrupted even if your home is fine.

Stay out of the ocean and away from all shorelines. Do not go down to the coast to watch it.

Please do not call 9-1-1 for weather updates or road conditions. Keep those lines open for people whose lives are in danger. Call 808-241-1711 for non-emergencies or 808-241-1725 for a recording of the road closures.

We have been through this before, and we will get through it together. Stay safe, Kauaʻi & Niʻhau.
