Can you separate the art from the artist?

In this opinion piece, Spectrum writer Kayla Winn explores the complicated relationship between music, morality, and the people behind the art we consume.

Using the criminal case involving singer D4VD, along with other controversial artists, Winn examines whether listeners can continue enjoying someone’s work after learning about allegations, conduct, or beliefs they find unacceptable.

Bowie State students also weigh in on the question: Does enjoying the art mean supporting the artist, and where should listeners draw the line?

Since this article was originally written, David Anthony Burke, known professionally as D4VD, has been charged in connection with the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Burke has pleaded not guilty. The case remains ongoing.
