The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association recently released their first comprehensive update to stroke rehabilitation guidelines in a decade.

One of the things that stood out most to us wasn’t a specific treatment recommendation. It was the way the guidelines describe recovery itself.

Recovery is recognized as nonlinear and ongoing. It can include adapting to profound change, rebuilding identity, reconnecting with meaningful roles and relationships, and
doing the emotional work of making meaning after stroke.

For Stroke Onward, this language feels deeply significant.

Stroke survivors and carepartners have long told us that some of the hardest parts of recovery happen beyond the physical — in identity, relationships, purpose, and figuring out how to move forward in a changed life.

We’re encouraged to see more of that reality reflected in the guidance shaping stroke rehabilitation.

Recovery is more than regaining function. It is about rebuilding a life.
