🤯 STOP shouting “pass” to get children passing more!

Instead, try these three ideas in your next session:

1. Create an overload
Give one team an extra player. Immediately, the child on the ball will have more options.

This naturally creates situations where teammates are unmarked and in space, encouraging children to share the ball. Rather than telling them to pass, set up scenarios where passing becomes the obvious choice.

2. Target players instead of goalkeepers
Replace the goalkeeper with a target player. A team can only score by passing to that target player.

This shifts the focus to combination play and increases the number of passes.

3. Play a normal match with a twist
Run a traditional match, but add one condition: for a team to win, every player must score.

Now the child who always dribbles or shoots has to involve teammates, and the quiet ones are encouraged to get involved. Teamwork becomes non-negotiable, and every player feels valued and included.

These simple games move children away from being told what to do and give them the freedom to learn the game for themselves.

Save this post to revisit these ideas and follow @CoachJonnyFFF for more child-first coaching tips.
