Covenant

The mirror keeps the maid.
The window takes the bride – hers, the frame.
Between the two, one step – the longest of her life.
The lightest – no contradiction.

That step: a covenant declared. A bond – indissoluble.
Around the table, in due season,
young olive shoots – evening after morning.
G-d saw it, that it is good.

This image of the bride’s preparations, too, is a direct, in-camera capture – no photo-manipulation of any kind. I photographed the scene as it was reflected in the glass of a framed floral print hanging on the wall.
A note on the poem:
The phrase ‘young olive shoots’ in the poem above is a quotation from Psalm 128:3, where the wife is likened to a fruitful vine and children to olive shoots:
‎אֶשְׁתְּךָ, כְּגֶפֶן פֹּרִיָּה— בְּיַרְכְּתֵי בֵיתֶךָ: בָּנֶיךָ, כִּשְׁתִלֵי זֵיתִים— סָבִיב, לְשֻׁלְחָנֶךָ.
‘Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine, in the innermost parts of thy house; thy children like olive plants, round about thy table.’
There is a quotation in ‘takes the bride’ as well, carrying the echo of the English wedding formula – ‘wilt thou take this woman’.
