ELEVATE THE NORTH. WHY the hell not?

WHY NOT A ST. LAWRENCE MARKET FOR ETOBICOKE NORTH?

DECADES OF CITY COUNCILS AND NOT ONE REAL MARKET FOR THE NORTH.
Time to build our own St. Lawrence.

Standing inside St. Lawrence Market made me ask a very simple question:

Why shouldn't Etobicoke North have a great destination food and farmers' market of its own?

Not a few temporary tables once in a while. I'm talking about a serious year-round community market destination — Ontario farmers, fresh produce, butchers, bakers, independent food businesses, multicultural vendors, affordable prepared food and community programming, with the infrastructure and transit access to make it successful.

So my question is: where is the ambition for Etobicoke North?

A councillor can lead it: bring forward a motion, direct City staff to study suitable City-owned or partner sites, bring Economic Development, Planning, Parks and Real Estate to the table, engage Ontario farmers and market operators, build a business case, pursue partnerships and funding, and build the Council coalition necessary to get it moving.

This is also about our food system. Farmers need reliable places to reach customers, while families are looking for better value and fresher food.

A well-designed farm-to-plate marketplace can shorten the distance between producer and customer, support Ontario agriculture and give local food entrepreneurs affordable opportunities to sell. Toronto has long recognized farmers' markets as part of the food supply chain that supports agriculture and gives residents access to fresh fruits and vegetables

“WHY NOT ETOBICOKE NORTH?”

We don't need to copy St. Lawrence Market brick for brick.

We need to match its ambition.

🥕 #Farm to plate.
🥩 Fresh local food.
👨‍🌾 Ontario farmers.
🏪 Independent businesses.
🌎 The cultures of #Etobicoke North.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A destination for families.
🚇 Proper access and infrastructure.

ELEVATE THE NORTH. WHY the HELL not?

ETOBICOKE NORTH WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN.
