katie_t86 wins by unanimous decision, retiring as the undisputed super-lightweight champion of the world.

Katie started boxing when women’s boxing wasn’t even sanctioned in Ireland. She went to bouts with her father, Pete, who she paid tribute to from the ring tonight, pretending to be a boy with her hair tucked beneath her headguard and ‘K Taylor’ on the card.

Tonight, 80,000 people turned up at crokepark_official in Ireland to watch her final fight.

Quite a lot has happened in between.

Katie took part in showcase bouts that helped persuade the IOC to include women’s boxing in the Olympic Games, won five consecutive World Championship golds and six European titles, then carried the Irish flag and won gold at London 2012, the first Olympics to include women’s boxing.

She turned professional with matchroomboxing in 2016 after approaching eddiehearn, going on to become undisputed lightweight champion and fight on some of boxing’s biggest stages, including beating serranosisters three times and becoming the first women to headline Madison Square Garden together.

The last professional boxing event staged at Croke Park was in 1972, when Muhammad Ali fought there. Fifty-four years later, 80,000 filled the stadium, millions more watched around the world, and countless young girls watched a woman headline knowing that boxing belongs to them too.

There are careers measured in medals, belts and records, but Katie’s legacy is bigger. She started boxing in an Ireland where there wasn’t a place for girls in the ring, helped take women’s boxing to the Olympic Games and finished her career as the undisputed world champion.
