🩺 New bill could change healthcare training in Florida

A bill requiring human trafficking training for nursing students is headed to the House Floor.
The bill’s sponsor says the training is crucial as Florida ranks third in the nation for human trafficking cases.
House Bill 303 was presented by Democratic Representative Robin Bartleman.
“Florida currently ranks third in the nation for human trafficking cases, with Miami-Dade County leading the state, and it remains a critical public health and safety crisis in Florida,” Bartleman said.
She says that when nurses can recognize the signs of human trafficking and respond appropriately, lives are saved.
“Medical visits, particularly in urgent care centers, hospitals, and ER settings, provide critical opportunities for nurses to recognize the signs of human trafficking and intervene,” Bartleman said.
Currently, nurses have to complete the training to renew their license.
But with this bill, students would have to complete the training before graduation.
Devin Cano is a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
“Education and awareness is crucial in the prevention of human trafficking, and this bill will help aid that,” Cano said.
The bill is headed to the full house. The Senate companion is also moving through subcommittees.
