Colorado opened the 2026 season with a 14-13 comeback win over Georgia Tech Thursday night at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta. A crowd of 52,113 packed the stadium for its first sellout in a season opener since 2006, and watched the Buffaloes trail 13-7 with under two minutes to play before quarterback Julian Lewis engineered a 75-yard drive in just eight plays, capping it with a 20-yard touchdown throw to tight end Charlie Williams to take the lead in the final minute.

Georgia Tech had one last chance, moving into range for a 45-yard field goal to win it, but Boo Carter came flying off the edge to block the kick with three seconds left and seal Colorado's first win of the year. The Tennessee transfer also recovered a Yellow Jacket fumble in the first quarter, capping a debut that helped anchor a dominant night on defense.

Lamont Lester Jr. was the story up front, piling up three sacks in his Buffaloes debut, the most by a CU player in a first game as a Buff since at least 2003. The defense forced three fumbles, held Georgia Tech to 5 of 13 on third down and limited the Yellow Jackets to just 51 rushing yards on 30 carries. Randon Fontenette led the team with eight total tackles, while Gideon Lampron paced the group with five solo stops.

Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion's "Go-Go" offense made its debut with a physical, downhill ground attack that produced 183 rushing yards, Colorado's most in a game since Sept. 20, 2025 and the second highest total of the Coach Prime era. Damian Henderson II led the way with 65 yards on 12 carries, Micah Welch added 58 yards on 13 carries and punched in the Buffs' first touchdown of the season from five yards out, JaQuail Smith chipped in 42 yards, and DeKalon Taylor added 22, including a 16-yard burst that set up the winning score. Joseph Williams came up big on the final drive with a 16-yard grab on third and 11 to keep it alive.

The night belonged to Colorado's Georgia natives, too. Both Buffaloes touchdowns were scored by players from the state, with Lewis (Carrollton) and Welch (Milledgeville) delivering in front of family and friends on a roster that carries 17 Georgians.

With the win, Colorado moves to 1-0 and returns to Folsom Field for the home opener against Weber State on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1:30 p.m. MT.
