Some “shocking facts” become incredibly popular on social media because they sound surprising, relatable, or unbelievable. But viral statistics aren’t automatically verified facts, and several claims in this graphic should be treated as estimates or internet trivia rather than universal truths.

Can most people read an analog clock? Many people can, although familiarity varies by age, education, culture, and technology use. Swimming ability also differs dramatically between countries and populations, so a single worldwide percentage can be misleading.

The claim about humans never seeing snow depends heavily on geography. Billions of people live in tropical or subtropical regions, but the exact percentage would require reliable global data. Password forgetfulness, flying experience, nail biting, and cooking skills are similarly difficult to summarize accurately with one universal statistic.

That doesn’t make the conversation pointless. These claims highlight interesting differences in everyday skills, habits, experiences, and access around the world.

So instead of asking, “Is this shocking fact true?” ask, “Where did this number come from?” Critical thinking is one of the most useful skills you can develop online.

Which number surprised you most—and which one do you think needs fact-checking?
