Who brings animal habitats to life?

Even avid Zoo visitors may not realize the care and thought that goes into the design of these spaces. Animals thrive when they have complex habitats that resemble their native homes. They need areas to retreat to when they want a little privacy and the ability to choose where and how they spend their time. The habitats you see in the Holden Reptile Conservation Center are thoughtfully designed by the people who know the animals best – the zookeepers!

David, who has cared for reptiles at the Detroit Zoo for over 30 years, can proudly say that he has had a hand in improving every reptile habitat. By creating custom rock work, including the prominent head that towers over the python pool, water features, ornate plant pairings, and painted skies, the habitats are not only more enriching for the animals but also give visitors a window into their specific biomes.

Raine has personal experience in the field working with several of the species that call the Zoo home. They use their expertise to add features that the animals would utilize in the wild, like abandoned gopher tortoise burrows and dead trees. By taking each species' needs into account, they are able to help them feel more at home, which increases their well-being.

On your next visit, make sure not just to scan for animals, but consider the complexity and uniqueness of their spaces.
