Voltron has officially reached unc status (very affectionately). the legend turns 42 today 🎂

if you discovered Voltron on Netflix, grab a seat! we’ve got a quick story for you, and it's more exciting than you might think.

In 1983, World Events Productions, a family-run broadcasting company in St. Louis, saw footage of Beast King GoLion, a Japanese series made by Toei, and instantly loved it. president and CEO Ted Koplar said, "GoLion was immediately appealing to me with its rich, colorful aesthetics and a storyline that I could follow without understanding a word of the Japanese dialogue."

the famous version is that WEP asked Toei to send over robot shows, accidentally received GoLion, and loved it so much they kept it. It was a happy accident!!

turning GoLion into Voltron was a massive job. a production team in Los Angeles reworked all 52 episodes, hired a scriptwriter with credits like Disney's Fantasia, and made a new stereo soundtrack (making it one of the first cartoons to do so). after all that work, Koplar admitted that they "had no idea whether it would succeed."

It did.

Voltron premiered on September 10, 1984, just one week before Transformers, and quickly became the number one kids' show in the US.

Voltron repeated its success in 1985. then, the special Fleet of Doom, which brought together Lion Voltron and Vehicle Voltron, premiered in 1986 (also on September 10!! what a special day <3)

now, 42 years later, Voltron has aired in over eighty countries and continues to reach new generations. if you enjoy lore, every single name was changed in the American adaptation, but Legendary Defender drew a lot of inspiration from GoLion, including Shiro's full name, Altea, Daibazaal, and the Sincline ships.

happy birthday to us! 🎂

and don't worry, more Voltron is on the way!

but you probably knew that already.
