It isn’t easy being king. Lions once ruled over Africa, but this mighty species is now on the retreat. Estimates suggest that less than 25,000 remain in the wild. A new National Geographic television series, Lion, tracks the life of a cub named Kio during his precarious journey to adulthood. For our September issue of National Geographic magazine, we partnered with aaronblaiseart, an animator on disneyanimation's original 1994 movie, The Lion King, to illustrate the life of an African lion from cub to fearsome predator.

Discover how lions are responding to a rapidly changing savanna at the link in bio and watch #NatGeoLION, now streaming on DisneyPlus and hulu.
