Nebraska’s defense enters its second game with a clear point of emphasis: start faster.

The Huskers limited Ohio to 303 total yards in last week’s season-opening win, but defensive coordinator Rob Aurich said the unit did not consistently play at the speed or confidence Nebraska expects.

“I think we’ve got to play faster,” Aurich said. “I think we can play off our keys much quicker. I think we’ve got to play with a little more fearlessness and roll.”

Nebraska allowed 17 first downs to Ohio, including 164 passing yards and 139 rushing yards. The Bobcats converted 6 of 15 third-down attempts and averaged 4.2 yards per rushing attempt. Nebraska forced one turnover, an interception, while keeping Ohio out of the end zone after the opening possession.

That first snap remains part of the teaching point this week after Nebraska surrendered a 70-yard gain to begin the game. Aurich lightened the mood when speaking with reporters, promising the Huskers would try not to allow another 70-yard play on the opening snap Saturday.

Nebraska’s preparation now turns to Bowling Green, which visits Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday for the Huskers’ first night game of the season.

The Falcons enter at 0-1 following a 20-13 loss to Tarleton State, but they showed a capable passing attack behind quarterback Jay Kastantin. In his Bowling Green debut, Kastantin completed 24 of 30 passes for 262 yards and led a late drive into Tarleton State territory before time expired.

Nebraska defenders said the challenge is to play their brand of football, create takeaways and give quarterback Anthony Colandrea and the offense more opportunities.

Aurich said the Huskers have the personnel to take another step forward. Now, he wants to see it show up with quicker reads, more decisive play and a cleaner start against the Falcons.

Saturday’s kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Central on FS1.
