Nebraska volleyball’s early-season road swing was equal parts exhausting and unforgettable.

The Huskers traveled from Las Vegas to Chicago, where their historic match against Missouri at Wrigley Field was postponed because of unsafe court conditions. Now, Nebraska is back in Lincoln for three matches in three days and its first chance to play inside a renovated Devaney Center.


“It’s been such an amazing trip, even though it was tiring,” Nebraska middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie said. “What a blessing it is to make such an impact on, I’d say, the progression of women’s sports.”

The trip delivered a once-in-a-lifetime setting at Wrigley, but the night ended early when condensation made the temporary court too slippery to continue. Nebraska libero Olivia Mauch said the team found a way to laugh through an unusual situation.

“I made a joke to Jordan Larson yesterday, like, have you ever heard of Disney on Ice?” Mauch said. “We were like Huskers on Ice.”

Mauch said the team leaned into one another as players navigated the slippery surface.

“We knew that the situation wasn’t probably going to be ideal, but just going out there and having each other’s backs, and we knew we were going to have fun no matter what,” Mauch said. “Since we were all in it together, I think it made it easier.”

Nebraska coach Dani Busboom Kelly said the Huskers handled the travel, media obligations and major-event atmosphere well. But she believes the return to Devaney comes at the right time, especially with a busy stretch of matches ahead.

“I do think there is some benefit to that because coming home now feels even more special,” Busboom Kelly said. “I think our team is prepared in a different way to face these next — we have a lot of games in two weeks.”

The Huskers will return to a Devaney Center with new chair-back seating, lighting, sound and expanded spaces for players and staff. Ogbechie said the changes were immediately noticeable.

“The upgrades have been amazing,” Ogbechie said. “Looking around at Devaney, all the new seats, the lighting and the speakers — this environment is going to be incredible, and I can’t wait.”


The facility updates extend beyond the court. Busboom Kelly said expanded team areas will give players, coaches and staff room to spend more time together before matches.

“There’s a place where everybody can hang out,” Busboom Kelly said. “There’s some time for some very organic, natural team bonding, and it’s just a beautiful space.”

Nebraska opens its home schedule with New Mexico State, followed by Baylor and Georgia Tech. Busboom Kelly called the three-match stretch a useful test for a postseason format the Huskers hope to face later.

“It really is a great test for the Big Ten Tournament,” Busboom Kelly said. “It’s very unique to have three games in three days, so we’ll use that, and it’ll be good to look back on this week when we’re talking about the Big Ten Tournament and what it takes to win that thing.”

Mauch said Nebraska is eager to get home but knows the early standard must continue.

“We started off very strong, but I think we have to uphold those standards throughout the rest of the season,” Mauch said. “We play three great teams this weekend, so I think it’s going to be a good challenge for us.”

Busboom Kelly said Nebraska administrators are still exploring when the suspended Missouri match could be resumed. She also reiterated that outdoor volleyball events can be valuable for the sport, but must be approached carefully when matches count toward postseason evaluation.

“I think it’s awesome for our sport,” Busboom Kelly said of the Wrigley event. “It really was unbelievable. … I think we have to be careful when we do them and why we’re doing those games.”
