#Statement: In Kudus, before the call to prayer has finished unspooling over the rooftops, the women are already seated. Long wooden tables stretch beneath tin awnings, each one crowded with shallow trays of shredded tobacco and cloves dried to the color of rust. The air smells sweet before it smells sharp — that particular scent of clove oil warming under morning sun, mixing with kretek smoke drifting in from somewhere outside where the men take their coffee. Radios murmur dangdut from cracked speakers propped against the wall. Somewhere, a baby cries and is hushed. The women do not look up. Their hands are already moving, folding thin rice paper around loose tobacco with a motion so practiced it looks less like labor and more like breathing. A small brown cigarette taking shape between thumb and forefinger every few seconds, then another, then another, the pile beside each woman growing taller than the last.
