#Statement: The last time I got a coffee at Misfit Society Coffee Club, it cost more than $7. And this was before tip, which I like to give because I remember what it’s like to work behind the counter and know I would likely crumble under the stress of being a barista.

I attended a discussion about three months ago about building a sustainable and enriching career. The presenter, who was my parents’ age, was telling the audience how crazy it is that “the young people” put down $5 on coffees, and I had to bite my tongue. I desperately wanted to tell her I’d jump for joy if an iced oat milk latte cost that little at an Ann Arbor coffee shop. If we were talking about an iced oat milk latte in New York City, where this conversation was taking place, they often go for upward of $8. I am a bit embarrassed to admit that one of the biggest things I took away from the discussion was that she thought $5 lattes were expensive.

It is normal for the Target on State Street to charge $5.39 for milk, while the average cost nationally sits at about $3.80. Grabbing a quick bite to eat at a place close to class like Revive + Replenish, where no sandwich costs less than $10, feels like paying an arm and a leg.
