#Opinion: In late August, the University of Michigan Hillel, our University’s branch of a larger organization dedicated to fostering a diverse Jewish community on college campuses across the country, cut ties with the University’s chapter of J Street. The self-described Jewish and pro-Israel organization lost Hillel’s support for continuing to associate with their parent lobbying organization that goes by the same name. This decision sends an aggressive (and wholly inaccurate) message from hardline pro-Israel Jews to the larger Jewish American society: The Jewish community cannot tolerate diverse perspectives on Israel. This implies that someone like me, who is both Jewish and does not support Israel’s genocide in Gaza, may never be included in the broader Jewish community.
