Nature has an insurance policy, and it lives at your Toronto Zoo ❄️🐾

With today being #NationalWildlifeDay, we’re also highlighting one of the most important conservation science initiatives here at your Zoo: Canada’s Wildlife Cryobank.

Are you aware? Located within our Wildlife Health & Science Centre, the Cryobank preserves valuable genetic material from wildlife at temperatures below –190°C, including living cells such as sperm, eggs, embryos and somatic cells. These materials can remain viable for the long term, creating a genetic reservoir that can support conservation breeding, scientific research and, potentially, future species recovery and reintroduction efforts.

For nearly four decades now, your Toronto Zoo has been collecting and preserving genetic material from some of the planet’s most threatened wildlife. As climate change, habitat loss, emerging disease and other pressures continue to challenge wild populations, safeguarding genetic diversity gives us another tool in the fight against extinction.

Through our current Guardians of Wild Strategic Plan (2025-2028), we are working to transform your Toronto Zoo from a conservation science organization operating a world-class zoo into an even greater force for wildlife, connecting people, animals, conservation science and traditional knowledge to fight extinction. A key part of that commitment is advancing biobanking, establishing responsible standards and priorities, and building partnerships that can increase conservation impact here in Canada and around the world.

The goal of Canada’s Wildlife Cryobank is ambitious: to preserve the genetic resources of Canada’s ecological and cultural keystone species and help contribute to Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy.

We know conservation is about preserving possibilities for generations we may never meet, and not only about protecting the wildlife we can see today.
