Tonight, Sisters PGH proudly returned to the Allegheny County Jail Oversight Board meeting. While this was our first meeting back in some time, advocating alongside community for transgender people incarcerated in the Allegheny County Jail is work we’ve been doing for years.

Our Founder & Executive Director, Ciora Thomas, and Monica Roberts Place Coordinator, Kennedy Botts, both spoke during public comment, emphasizing that transgender people deserve representation in decisions that directly impact our community. Ciora shared that meaningful oversight includes ensuring transgender voices have a seat at the table.

We’re also excited to share that Ciora has officially applied to be considered for one of the three community representative seats on the Jail Oversight Board. These community seats are filled through Allegheny County’s appointment process and confirmed by County Council. We’ll be sure to keep everyone updated as the process moves forward.

During the meeting, it was also confirmed that transgender women continue to be housed with cisgender men and are often placed in solitary confinement for their “safety.” We believe transgender people deserve safety—not isolation. The United Nations has recognized prolonged solitary confinement (more than 15 consecutive days) as a practice that may amount to torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

Our Executive Director also had the opportunity to meet the new Warden, who graciously offered a tour of the jail. We’re hopeful this opens the door for Sisters PGH to partner in providing re-entry support and connecting individuals to services through the Stonewall Inn Pittsburgh.

Now that we’re fully settled into the Stonewall Inn Pittsburgh, Sisters PGH is committing to having a presence at every Jail Oversight Board meeting moving forward. We will continue showing up, speaking up, and advocating until every transgender person in our community is treated with dignity, respect, and humanity.

The work continues. 🏳️‍⚧️💙
