Seattle is taking AI-powered biology to a new level with a $95 million AI BioDesign initiative backed by the Fund for Science and Technology. The project brings together the University of Washington, Fred Hutch Cancer Center and the Allen Institute to design biological molecules that do not exist in nature. 

Researchers will use AI to design new proteins, genes and biological systems, then build and test them in the lab. The initiative could eventually support new cancer treatments, disease research and even enzymes capable of breaking down plastics.
